Taylor made some of the first real improvements to American whiskey production. He started using copper stills, and while both copper and its vapors are undesirable to a distiller (hence why they’re more often seen polished than dull in working whiskey distilleries), copper doesn’t react and nothing dissolves into it.

With a wealthy family fortune behind him, he built one of the grandest distilleries along the Kentucky River and named it after his great-uncle Edmund Haynes Taylor Sr., a famed politician who became renowned for fighting to clean up Bourbon’s sanitary conditions after many were maimed or lost to diseases that sprang from filth in distilleries.

He also has another important distinction: That insistence led Congress to pass the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, which prevented “rampant adulteration” that occurred when fillers like iodine, tobacco‐juice, prune juice and cochineal insects (even dead rats!) found their way into cheap whiskies tainting other whiskies stored in less-than-ideal storage environments.

In the 1860s, Taylor bought the Old Fire Copper Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky and began producing some of the best bourbon ever made. Today his eponymous brand is owned by Buffalo Trace Distillery and includes several bourbons that bear his name.
