Wayne Douglas Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Gretzky”s professional hockey career began in the World Hockey Association (WHA). He signed a contract with the Indianapolis Racers at the age of 17, in 1978. The Oilers were one of four franchises admitted into the NHL that summer, and Gretzky went on to greater heights.

In his first NHL season (1979-80), he won the Hart Trophy as the league’s MVP, a title he would win nine times in ten seasons.
