Early Life and Education
Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1981. He graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and then served with the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Division—later merged into the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry. After completing his degree, Walz continued in the National Guard alongside his civilian teaching career at West High.
Walz announced his candidacy for Congress in 2005, running as a Democrat against six-term incumbent Gil Gutknecht of the Republican Party. After an aggressive campaign, Walz won the election with 53 percent of the vote. He was re-elected to a second term in 2008.
Walz was first elected to federal office in 2006, where he served as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s 1st congressional district from 2007 until 2019. There he was known to be a bipartisan congressman who supported veterans rights, general education reform, and increased access to healthcare. In 2018, Walz was elected Governor of Minnesota and reelected in 2022.
