Introduction to the IPL Schedule

As the most popular cricket tournament in the world, the Indian Premier League (IPL) schedule is always eagerly anticipated by fans. This year's edition will be no different, with a total of 60 matches taking place over a period of two months.

The first match of the season will be played on April 7th, with the final taking place on May 27th. As usual, all matches will be played at night to ensure maximum television viewership. The Teams and their Groups

The IPL schedule is split into two parts: the group stage and the knockout stage. The group stage consists of eight groups, each containing four teams. The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stage.

The knockout stage consists of a further four groups, each containing two teams. The top team from each group will progress to the semi-finals, with the winners of those games meeting in the final.

So there are a total of eight teams in the knockout stage, four in the semi-finals and two in the final.

The Dates of the IPL Matches

The first season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was held from 18 April – 1 June 2008. The tournament was originally scheduled to be played between 20 April and 3 June 2008, but was moved to avoid clash with the general elections. A total of 59 matches were played over 44 days in fourteen venues across India. The opening ceremony was held on 17 April in Mumbai, two days before the first match was played.

The second season of the IPL started on 10 April 2009 and concluded on 24 May 2009. It was also the inaugural season for the new team Kolkata Knight Riders as well as the only season for Rajasthan Royals who were suspended for two years following involvement in a spot-fixing scandal. A total of 60 matches were played over 45 days in ten venues across India. The opening ceremony took place on 9 April 2009 in Johannesburg, South Africa due to venue unavailability in India.

The third season of IPL started on 12 March 2010 and ended on 25 April 2010. A total of 74 matches were played over 53 days in twelve venues across India and one venue in South Africa. It was also the first time that a game was held outside India when Deccan Chargers defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore at Centurion, South Africa on 12 April 2010.
